Christmas 2012

It has been a while since I last updated the page!!

The garden is looking fabulous at the moment with the new fence and long garden bed running along filled with corn, cucumber, tomatoes, sunflowers and beans!

we also finally got rid of the dirt mound! thank goodness I hear you say!  we now have a mini mount Carrington with a grapefruit tree and magnolia tree on top! this is in early stages of development the tree and plants are just getting established!

During the course of the year we noticed the number of people coming to working bees dwindled a lot so the working bee will be changed to sunday to try increase numbers! working bees will be on the <2nd sunday of every month at 9am

This will commence in December for our Christmas party on the 9th December 9am our party will be combined with the Carrington tennis club and the Carrington bowling club who is fabulously donating the snags for the party!!

so bring gardening gear, tennis gear if you fancy a hit and some change for a drink at the club!!

see you then!!

Yet another success

It was yet another successful working bee! Garden beds were tidied and we now have 3 new fruit trees!! A fruit salad, a lime and a peach tree!
More seeds were planted ready for winter!
Children played and there was lots of social chatter!
Looking forward to next month – -2 nd sat of the month 14 th April 2012

It has been a long time since my last post. However there is a working bee this Saturday 10.03.2012 at 9am and I hope to see many faces to chat and garden with.
We have big plans for 2012- a shed, chooks, new garden beds and some art and of course chatting with friends and eating yummy food!
Hope to see many faces new and old!

Unique veg

When we buy fruit and veg from mainstream supermarkets the produce is all the same! Perfect in every way, no funny shapes or extra bumps! And at what extra cost!!

What is wrong with a bent zucchini or small bananas? When was it decided that bent or bumped fruit and veg was bad and not sellable??

The cucumber picture is a twin from our garden and the awesome zucchini is from the farmers markets.
There is beauty in uniqueness!

Christmas lunch

It was a lovely little working bee, tomatoes were streaked and garden beds mulched! Lunch consisted of a rhubarb trifle, quiche, fresh fruit and a cream bun. A lovely morning to celebrate christmas, friends and a great year gone by.

Food for thought!

We have borage growing in our and not knowing myself what to use it for I investigated it a little further!

Fresh borage has high levels of vitamin C, a powerful natural antioxidant that helps to remove harmful free radicals from the body. Vitamin C is known to boost immune system, heal wounds, and has anti-viral effects. Borage herb contains very high levels of Vitamin A and carotenes, which are powerful flavonoids antioxidants. Together, they protect against free radicals.

Borage has good amount of minerals like iron (41% of RDA), calcium, potassium, manganese, copper, zinc and magnesium.

Borage is a good source of B-complex vitamins, particularly rich in niacin (Vitamin B3). Niacin helps lower LDL cholesterol levels in the body. In addition, it has riboflavin, thiamin, pyridoxine and folates in adequate levels.

A smoothie recipe is
1 cup water
4 kiwis
1 banana
1 orange
2 cups of borage ( leaves and flowers) blend together well.

Perhaps something to try!?
